Aly Raisman

Body Image Spokesperson for Walden Center

Hi!, I’m Aly Raisman, two-time gold medalist, world champion and USA Gymnastics Team captain.

In 2014, I teamed up with Walden Center for Education and Research and Walden Behavioral Care as their spokesperson to spread the word about eating disorders prevention and how to maintain a healthy body image. I had a blast working with everyone at Walden this past year and wanted to highlight some of my favorite memories with you.

Meeting with Walden Patients and Staff

I felt so honored to meet the patients and staff in Walden’s inpatient and residential programs. The patients asked me so many wonderful questions and educated me about what it’s like to have eating disorders. The staff was also very warm and welcoming. I was glad to be able to give everyone a signed autograph. I hope my visit inspired the patients to continue to fight for full recovery. I look forward to visiting with them again in the near future!

Visiting with Schools

Spending time with kids is one of my favorite things to do, so you can only imagine my excitement when I got to visit with students at Cameron Middle School in Framingham and McCall Middle School in Winchester. I was at the two schools as part of Walden’s School-Based Eating Disorder Prevention Program. My portion of the program involves answering students’ questions about body image and self-esteem. These students asked some tough questions, but I think sharing my experience as a professional athlete with a positive self-image inspired and empowered them to feel good about themselves.

Filming a Walden Center Public Service Announcement

Did you know that more than half of teen girls and nearly a third of teen boys skip meals, fast and smoke cigarettes to control their weight? This is just one of the alarming statistics I learned when filming Walden Center’s PSA. But, I won’t spoil it by telling you what else is in the PSA. Visit Walden Center’s YouTube channel to watch the video.

Speaking at the Boston Health and Fitness Expo.

During the spring, I was a presenter at the Channel 7/Boston Medical Center Health and Fitness Expo at Hynes Convention Center. When it was my turn to speak, hundreds of attendees gathered to hear my presentation on body image. It was amazing to look out into the audience and see people of all ages listening to what I had to say and to know that I was making a positive impact on their lives.

This year, I will continue to be Walden’s spokesperson, and I can’t wait to see what memories Walden and I will make together!

Best,
Aly Raisman
